There is a high level of scrutiny being placed on diets now more than ever. When faced with the prospects of a potentially life threatening illness, many take to opportunity to review the decisions they make in their daily life and try to instill a healthier way of living. The most obvious changes to make revolve around diet.
There is greater understanding being reached about the importance of foods and food ingredients in terms of human health. For centuries there has been recognition the particular foods can assist the treatment of medical conditions, even when the reasons why these foods worked was unknown. There continues to be research undertaken in an attempt to further understand the implications of consuming the food we do.
Foods are frequently talked about in terms of their nutritional value, but there is much more value to foods than nutrition alone. There has been a high level of research undertaken during the last 5 years as to the medical benefits of specific foods. Scientists now know that there are certain foods or ingredients that can be useful in preventing illnesses such as prostate cancer.
Lycopene
Many fruits and vegetables are recognised for displaying cancer-fighting properties. Foods containing lycopene (such as grapefruit, mango, watermelon and tomatoes) can significantly reduce the incidence of prostate cancer. Foods containing this component appear to attack free radical cells (which can form into cancerous cells) therefore reducing the chance of the cancer occurring in the first place. Similarly vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts contain high levels of cancer fighting phytochemicals.
Selenium
Other foods to regularly include in the diet should be mushrooms, brazil nuts, prawns and tuna (naturally high in selenium). Selenium acts in much the same way a lycopene by helping to prevent cell damage from free radicals. Peanut butter, almonds or sunflower seeds (high in vitamin E), and soy-based products can also be added to the diet. All of these foods assist in maintaining good overall health, but specifically ensure the prostate remains as healthy as possible.
There are some foods though, that contribute to cancer development, and they must be avoided at all costs. These include char grilled meats, which significantly increase the level of free radicals absorbed into the body, and saturated fats. Unfortunately for many men these over cooked meats are particularly appetizing and are often associated with functions like barbeques.
Diet is critical in maintaining a high level of body health. The review of a diet can also be a useful tool to complement the more traditional approach to treating and preventing medical conditions such as prostate cancer. There is still some way to go to prove that changing a diet definitely will prevent the occurrence of prostate cancer, but the signs are encouraging. There can only be benefits to be gained by adopting a healthy diet, irrespective of whether you suffer from cancer or not.
