Foods for a Healthy Prostate

The following will all help to keep your prostate in good shape.

Soy

A plant source of complete protein and numerous other valuable nutrients such as flavonoids (plant hormones) and essential fatty acids. Try the different varieties from tofu to tempeh and soy flour to soy drinks. There are lots of different recipes.

Cold-water fish

Salmon, cod, sardines and tuna are an excellent source of vitamin D and essential fatty acids, both of benefit to the prostate. Herring is also high in zinc.

Fresh Vegetables

From dark green and leafy to yellow and red to white and creamy, all will keep you well supplied with carotenes, flavonoids and saponins, as well as lots of vitamins and fiber. Fiber is particularly helpful in keeping cholesterol levels down, which is important for the prostate gland.

Fresh Fruit

The best for the prostate are the red and yellow kinds from tomatoes and apricots to strawberries and oranges. A good source of Vitamin C, many fruits are high in the plant pigments called flavonoids and carotenoids which are nutritional powerhouses.

Nuts and Seeds

A daily handful of nuts and seeds is a good source of protective minerals and essential fatty acids. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds especially will help keep you topped with zinc which, like essential fatty acids, is involved with hormone regulation important to prostate health. Zinc also fights and resists prostate related infections.

Whole Grains

Wheat, oatmeal, brown rice and other complex carbohydrates help keep your cholesterol levels low and fiber up, both significant aids to the prostate. Oatmeal and wheat bran are also both fairly good sources of zinc, and oatmeal is also rich in saponins and the hard-to-get GLA, an essential fatty acid.

Organic Live Yogurt

A good source a few times a week of beneficial bacteria for the digestive tract. Keeping the bacterial balance right will keep the urinary tract free of infection. Eat only "live" yogurts made from milk of organically reared animals to avoid encountering hormones, antibiotics and other chemical added to animal feed.

Cranberry Juice

Keeps bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract, so a daily glassful is a precautionary measure against infection if you have a tendency to get urinary tract infections. However, please don't drink the sugar-laden varieties.

Water, Water, Water

This is an essential, but often forgotten nutrient required for the processing of all the others. Dehydration stresses the prostate while about eight glasses of clean water a day will keep your system well supplied/ Mild herb teas make a pleasant variation and a worthwhile switch from coffee, a prostate irritant.
