It is not normal for men to experience pain during sexual intercourse. Pain is a message that something is wrong and if this is not dealt with the underlying condition may worsen. At its most basic, pain is very likely to affect performance, as well as your pleasure. Pain can also have long-term psychological effects such as fear of penetration and could lead to impotence.
The most common reasons for pain during intercourse are:
- Infections such as herpes or sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea.
- Over-tight foreskin or damage to the forseskin or penis due to inflammation, skin conditions, or other forms of tissue damage. Scar tissue from previous trauma can cause tightening and discomfort.
- Penis deformities such as hyperspadias.
- Priapism, which is a sustained and often painful condition in which the penis remains erect for lengthy periods of time even when there is no sexual arousal.
- Some men experience an allergic reaction to condoms, in which case the problem is easily remedied by changing to the appropriate form of condom. Sometimes an allergic reaction can occur as a result of vaginal fluids or contraception chemicals.
- In some cases men experience penis hypersensitivity after sexual intercourse or during ejaculation. Possible reasons are inflammation, cancer, urinary tract problems or internal deformities.
In every case it is important to seek out a diagnosis and treatment for the condition.
