How to Turn Your Home Into a Stress Free Zone

Your home should be a haven where you can retreat from the worries of the day. Here's how to create a stress free home.

You may lead a busy life juggling family, home, and work responsibilities. Sometimes stress levels can rise resulting in anxiety and fatigue. Why not turn your home into a stress free zone? By making some simple changes, you can transform your home into a soothing environment where you can unleash the worries of the day.

Here's how to a stress free home where you can melt away the worries of the day:

  1. Change Your Home's Lighting

Fluorescent lights which are found in many homes can be stressful on the eyes and on the brain. Studies have also shown that certain types of lighting can change levels of stress related hormones and even alter your natural body rhythms. The lighting in your home should be as close to natural light as possible. Instead of turning on artificial light, why not open the windows and let the sun shine in? Bright, natural light can help turn your house into a stress free zone.
  2. Play Some Soft Music in the Background

Consider investing in a system that can pipe music into each room of your house. Fill your rooms with the soothing sounds of new age or classical music. Music is known to have a positive mood altering effect and can even help you be more productive.
  3. Practice Aromatherapy

Certain odors have been shown to promote relaxation and can actually alter a person's alpha brain waves, a sign that a person is more relaxed. Why not burn scented candles or incense made of essential oils that promote relaxation? Some examples of scented oils that encourage relaxation and stress relief are lavender, jasmine, chamomile, and geranium. Enjoy these relaxing smells when you come home from the office and feel your stress melt away.
  4. Dress Comfortably

When you enter your house, immediately switch your work clothes for more comfortable attire. Why not put on a silky night gown and warm, soft slippers if you're not going to go for the evening? Your body will learn to associate the act of changing clothes after work as a sign to relax.
  5. Bring Nature Into Your Home

How about adding a small, tabletop waterfall that makes a soothing sound as the water flows? The gentle sound of flowing water can be quite relaxing to the body and the soul.
  6. Eliminate Clutter

A house that's filled with disorganization and clutter can really escalate your stress levels. Take the time to eliminate items you no longer need. Give them to a charity organization or homeless shelter where they can be put to good use. You'll feel like a burden has been lifted off of you.
