Ways to Reduce Stress

Just what is stress? Learn to recognize the symptoms and take action before stress takes its toll on you.

At some point in our lives, we all feel stress. We feel stress when we're trying to adapt to change that is new or perhaps beyond our control. We feel stress when there are simply too many demands placed on us and we become afraid that we can't cope.

The signs of stress are as individual as each person feeling stressed. However, most of us can identify with feelings of:

  • Headaches
  • Stomach Pains
  • Tense Muscles
  • Mood Changes
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety

Left unchecked, stress takes its toll on us physically and can significantly impair our health. Overtime, consistent stress can have serious consequences. The physical consequences of stress can include stomach ulcers, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Given the potential consequences, it's wise to quickly recognize the signs of stress and take action to manage it. So how can we reduce stress?

The first step is to identify the stress. Exactly what is causing your stress? Is there anything you can do to change or eliminate the cause of your stress?

If there's no way to rid yourself of the cause of your stress, other ways to reduce the stress you feel, include:

  • Good Nutrition.

Eating a healthy, well balanced diet helps your body cope with the physical effects of stress. This includes drinking plenty of water to keep you hydrated.
  • Exercise. You don't need to go to the gym three times a week. A brisk walk around your neighbourhood will do wonders to clear your head and to refresh and energize you.
  • Engage in a Hobby

Take time to do something that you really enjoy. Engaging in a hobby or an activity that you enjoy, helps you relax and gives you something besides your stress to focus on.
  • Relaxation Techniques.

Learn techniques such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing. Just a few minutes of any of these techniques will do wonders to reduce your stress levels.
  • Self Help.

There are an almost infinite variety of self help courses, book and workshops that will help you manage and reduce your stress. Workshops and courses may be available through your local community college or a continuing education course.

Remember, stress can be managed and reduced. But, if your stress is constant and intense, never hesitate to seek the professional help of your doctor or a counsellor.
