A vegan diet helps against diabetes

Each person that has been diagnosed with diabetes has to change their eating habits to a healthier way of consuming. But that’s probably one of the most difficult things for people to do.

A vegan diet containing less fat and less sugar combined with avoiding meat, fish and milk products, will help to push back the symptoms of diabetes type 2 better then the standard prescribed diet of today. These are the results of an investigation of the University of Toronto.

Advantages

With a vegan diet the blood sugar level went down more strongly (Level of glucose a1c went down with 1.23 compared to 0.38) and diabetics following a vegan diet lost an average of twice the weight of a standard diet. (6.5 kilo compared to 3.1 kilos). Also the cholesterol went down twice as much as with a standard diet and even the kidneys worked better. Additional advantage: it is easier to commit to this diet because the quantities and the number of calories don’t have to be calculated. After 22 weeks on a diet, 43% of the diabetics following the vegan diet and 26% of those who followed the standard diet, could stop with taking medication or decrease the medication quantities.

The interest of the diet

De researchers are very happy with these results. "The vegan diet appears to be at least just as good as the standard diet and perhaps even better. Above all, the results demonstrate the interest of the diet. We sincerely hope that following the vegan diet becomes more important than taking medication," according to Neal Bernard, chairman of the Committee of Sound Use of Medicines. "Often people think that the vegan diet doesn’t work, but that’s because they aren’t patient enough and don’t follow this diet long enough to experience the positive results of the vegan diet," according to David Jenkins of the University of Toronto who joined the conversation.

Healthier food

Approximately 18 million Americans suffer from diabetes type 2. This type of diabetes occurs through a combination of bad eating habits and no physical activity, but there’s also a genetic component. People carrying this type of diabetes have increased risk of having a heart disease, a stroke, dysfunctional kidneys, blindness or even losing a leg or a arm.
