Are We Omega-3 Deficient? Why is It?

With the pollution levels of our oceans and lakes and fish being the prime source of Omega-3 oils, it is no wonder that we humans are falling short of these very important oils. So, what can we do?

Are There Other Less Polluted Sources ?

Flaxseed is being incorporated by those that are aware of its Omega-3 contents. It is in the form of ALA and must still be transformed by the body into EPA and DHA, a less efficient absorption, but Flaxseed has many other benefits that certainly outweigh the conversion factor. Some of the benefits of taking Flaxseed in a finely milled form is that it can be mixed directly into your morning cereal, such as oatmeal or other minimally processed cereal. The box of milled Flaxseed usually suggests pouring at least 1 tablespoon over your cereal and that you should drink a lot of water along side or shortly after. Because of the naturally high fiber content of milled Flaxseed, it will regulate your G.I. processes and aid in any passed constipation problems.

The American Diet Grossly Deficient In Omega-3

The american diet, we are told by many top nutritional researchers that with its high concentration on processed foods, many artificial sweeteners and especially low-fat foods for dieters have all but depleted the daily intake of the essential fatty acids(Omega-3s) needed by the body to ward off many diseases. Research is also showing that deficiency of Omega-3 and Omega-6 over a long period of time may cause the onset of Altzheimer's disease. Some nutritional researchers are also finding links between low intake of essential fatty acids and the onset of Macular Degeneration, a disease of the eye. It is also a well known fact pointed out by many top nutrition researchers that without the intake of fat, not only the lack of Omega-3 essential fats, the vitamins, A, D, E and K will not be absorbed in the human body. We are told by these same researchers that even if a person eats fruits and vegetables to get their needed daily vitamins, they will not be absorbed unless fat is ingested along side and the fats that are primarily needed for all body functions are the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Major Sources Of Omega-3 Oils

This "miracle oil" can be found in abundance in oily, cold-water fish, like Salmon, Herring, Sardines, canned Tuna and Mackerel, to name the most prominent. It is unfortunate that even these fish can contain appreciable levels of heavy metals, such as mercury, lead and cadmium and some may contain very low levels of these contaminants, but are polluted with at least some levels of PCB's. To at least minimize this, it is suggested to use fish oil capsules that have been "purified" so as to guarantee almost non-detectable levels of these heavy metals. Lately, the government has been promoting the use of added Omega-3 oils to foods in the hope of increasing the levels in our daily foods. We can only hope this trend continues.
