If you are a chocoholic, you will be most pleased to know that this wonderful bitter-sweet tasting candy you can't get enough of can actually be good for you.
Chocolates are Heart-Friendly!
Chocolates contain flavonoids, a compound found naturally in plant-based foods, known for their protective features. Flavonoids also have antioxidant properties, which can significantly help the body to resist the damage from free radicals, and thus preventing the possibility of plaques to form on the arterial walls.
The Healthier Chocolate
However, not all chocolates are rich in flavonoids. The basic rule of thumb is that the more the chocolate undergoes processing and fermentation (as in the case of milk chocolates and commercially-produced chocolates), the lesser becomes its flavonoid content. So, if you want a healthier chocolate, go for black, or the dark bittersweet ones.
Other Benefits of Chocolates
Interestingly, aside from being heart-friendly, chocolates have other health benefits as well. They can be mood-lifters, and self-esteem builders by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain.
Some have claimed that the smell of chocolates is very relaxing. Reportedly, too, chocolates can reduce one's appetite for food if eaten before meals. So, if you're trying to lose weight, drink a cup of chocolate before you sit down to eat.
Even with all these benefits of chocolates, however, anything in excess is still harmful to the body. It is therefore always wise to eat chocolates in moderation.
