Dangerous E-numbers 1

There are loads of E-numbers in our foods and other products. Know which are dangerous and which not?

If you read the ingredients of food, you have these nice ingredients called E-numbers. E-numbers are separated into different groups

  1. Colors (E100 to E199)
  2. Preservatives (E200 - E299)
  3. Acids, Antioxidants, Mineral salts (E300 - E399)
  4. Emulsifiers & Stabilisers (E400 to E499)
  5. Mineral salts & Anti-caking agents (E500 to E599)
  6. Flavour enhancers (E600 to E699)
  7. Miscellaneous (E900 to E1520)

Let's review the colors.

E102: Tartrazine

Also known as Yellow No.5. It is used to color: drinks, jams, cereal, sweets, canned fish, soups, snack foods and more. In the past it has been discovered that this E-number has caused: Nettle rash and asthma attacks. It is also linked to hyperactivity, chromosomal damage and thyroid tumors. This is banned in Austria and Norway.

E104: Quinoline Yellow

This is Yellow No.10. It has been used in cologne, lipsticks and a wide range of medications. It is known to cause dermatitis. It has been banned in the USA, Australia and Norway.

E107:Yellow 7G

Another Yellow. Can cause an allergic reaction if you have asthma. banned in the USA and Australia.

E110: Sunste Yellow

Used in sweets, ice cream, cereals, drinks, bakery, distaste for food, canned fish, snack foods, also in a wide range of medication. Can cause allergies, runny nose, kidney tumours, nasal congestion, hyperactivity, vomiting, chromosomal damage, abdominal pain, nausea, indigestion. Banned in Norway

E122: Azorubine, Carmoisine

Dangerous to people with asthma and people allergic to aspirin. Commonly used in jelly and marzipan. Banned in Norway, Sweden, Austria, USA.

E123: Amaranth

This is being used in Cake mixtures and jelly. Animal testing showed some foetal deaths and birth defects. Can also cause hyperactivity, asthma and eczema. Banned in USA, Russia, Norway, Austria and others.

E124: Ponceau

Is known to cause allergic reactions to people with asthma or those that are allergic to aspirin. Banned in USA and Norway.
