American people are deeply concerned about the type of foods that they eat. Many diet plans have started with much confusion to some. The diet plans run the mile from loosing weight, improving health, heart care, and the list goes on. It is no wonder that many of us have a difficult time in selecting the right diet plan. Many people do have health problems that require special foods or a manner of eating in order to loose weight.
Our dietary habits are of a great concern in today's society. Health wise we should toward other options in order to improve ourselves.
Just as we look to the Old Testament for the Ten Commandments, we also can find Dietary Laws that are just as valuable.
When we teach our children the rules of the Ten Commandments we know that these laws given to Moses for the Jewish people, however, we do not tell our children that “only” do these laws apply to the Jewish people but to us as well. The same should hold true for the “Jewish Dietary Laws” that were given to Moses. There are three very important reasons that God gave Moses these Jewish Dietary Laws. Today we refer to the laws as “Kashrut” or eating “Kosher.” All the same, the principal in Moses time for the Jewish people is the same today for everyone.
The three reasons that everyone should prepare kosher foods:
The three reasons that we should prepare our food and eat it in the manner that God order his people to do so long ago are as follows:
-
The first reason and the most important reason is that God himself commanded us to prepare our food and eat it in the Kashrut manner. (Leviticus 11:45) “For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt to be your God “ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.” Remember the same God gave us the Ten Commandments.
-
There is another school of thought that God is a cosmic doctor and kashrus is a medical plan to ensure the health of his people. The Jewish people became vigorous and fit by following the Dietary Plan.
-
The final theory being that in those days there were no refrigeration units so this was a way to prevent food poisoning. The Jewish people had no other way to keep their foods and by preparing them thus, it kept the food safe.
The Dietary Laws called “Kashrut” are very simple:
The “Kashrut” requirements are very simple and anyone can follow the diet. It does not take a Rabbi or Holy Man to bless the food. The diet stems around two particular rules. The first rule is in the preparation of the food and the second rule is the type of foods that you may eat. The preparation is simple do not prepare any vegetables or dairy products in the same utensils that you use for meat products.
The vegetables are usually all “kosher” you just need to make sure that there are no bugs in the vegetables and they were not sprayed with many pesticides. Organic Vegetables are the best and the most trusted. Dairy products especially milk presents no problem today because of our pasteurization process. The drinking of milk products is healthy and highly recommended.
The next rule concerns what you may or may not eat. In order to remain “HOLY” as GOD commanded certain meats are clean while other meats are not clean. Just remember that animals with cloven hooves who chew their cuds are clean. Fish with fins and scales are clean. Birds that are able to fly, who eat grain and vegetables are clean. That when you prepare them make sure that you wash the meat good so that no blood is found in the food. Insects, shellfish, and reptiles are not clean and should be avoided. Most winged swarming creatures prohibited, as they are not fit for consumption.
Kashrut: The dietary laws are considered the rhythm of life
The simple fact of life is that if you eat as God commands then you will have a normal healthier life. You will find that you have less health problems and stress does not consume your every waking moment. You will sleep much better and with proper rest feel much better. The eating is a part of the Kashrut the other part is that when you do eat you bless each food asking God to sanctify both you and the food.
We waken to a better commitment to God, to justice on earth, and to holiness in every aspect of our lives. Kashrut, the dietary laws can become the rhythm of your life pattern providing the diet plan you need and the spiritual outlook that God has promised. Eat well and be well!
