Eat to Beat Cancer

According to research, these 9 foods can help protect against a variety of cancers.

  1. Canned Beans

    They're loaded with fiber, which help protect against colon and stomach cancer. Research also shows they may help reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence in postmenopausal women.
  2. Broccoli

    It's high in a phytochemical called sulforaphane, which helps fight carcinogens, and is rich in an antioxidant indole-3-carbinol, which has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  3. Carrots

    This Veggie is high in antioxidants that have been associated with a lower risk of bladder, cervix, prostate, colon, larynx and esophageal cancer, as well as postmenopausal breast cancer. Try to eat them cooked, not raw, as findings suggest that this may allow for better absorption.
  4. Coffee

    Some studies indicate that one cup a day may help protect against liver cancer.
  5. Red or Purple Grapes

    They're chockfull of resveratrol, an antioxidant that's been shown to inhibit growth of cancer cells (specifically breast, stomach, colon and leukemia).
  6. Lemons

    They contain a group of chemicals called limonoids, which have been shown to protect against breast, lung, skin and colon cancer.
  7. Mushrooms

    Certain mushrooms, such as shiitake, are loaded with beta-glucans, which stimulate your body's production of cancer -fighting natural killer cells.
  8. Cranberries

    They're high in an antioxidant that's been found in studies to fight leukemia, breast, lung, and colon cancer cells.
  9. Yogurt

    It's a rich source of probiotics, the "good" bacteria in your gut that help keep "bad" bacteria at bay, especially H. pylori, which is linked to esophageal and stomach cancer.
