Eating to Live

An persuasive essay on eating healthy.

Eating is something we all do, it is the great equalizer. It is what we eat, however, that sets us apart. It is important to pay attention to this vital activity. What we use to fuel our bodies, and the manner in which we supply this fuel should be governed in order to responsibly manage our bodies.

Whenever one visits the doctor's office complaining of complications with their normal living routine, the doctor's first question is almost always one relating to diet or digestion. If you have made such a visit recently, the question of “what have you been eating?” or “when was your last bowel movement?” may have been asked. The reasons for such questions is that many medical problems start with what we decide to eat. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in America, and it is directly linked with diet. Many other health issues that plague this county are also directly related to what we eat, such as, diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure. Moreover, most other diseases and conditions can be indirectly linked, or exacerbated by, bad diet.

Poor food choices also degrade quality of life, and generally limit the body's thinking and reaction time. While at a sales position - an occupation that requires one to be alert and energetic - I made the decision to eat healthier. After a couple of weeks I noticed my energy level was noticeably and consistently higher than the previous weeks. Furthermore, I was able to answer customer questions more effectively, and provide a better attitude for my clients. My sales were likewise boosted, along with my energy and enthusiasm; the boost I attributed to my change in eating habits.

Some people find it difficult to change the daily habits of negative eating. Some say, “My father (or someone else) lived to be eighty, and they always ate what they wanted.” I agree that it is hard to change a part of your lifestyle you have kept consistent your entire life, and there are in fact people who get lucky and live long lives without censoring what they eat, but it is not impossible to change diet. You can start with small things. For example, no sodas, only water while working, and adding more greens to your dinner plate. These simple things will give you powerful results that will inspire and enable you to make further changes. The people who decided to take their chances may find that luck was not on their side as it was for their father or friend. By the time one realizes this, the person may have done irreparable damage to their body. They may no longer qualify for medical or life insurance. Without such coverage the entire family could be put in jeopardy.

So, what did you eat for breakfast? Did you even have breakfast? What about lunch and dinner? The answers to these questions are very important. What we put into our bodies is exactly what we get out. If you answered junk to the questions, you may want to consider changing what you eat, because if you do not, you will be putting you life, your livelihood, and your family at risk.
