Just How Healthy are Fruits and Vegetables?

Today's produce is less nutritious than it should be due to mass-production farming. Proper nutrition is made more difficult because of it.

Eat your veggies! Have an apple instead of a cookie! Every one of us have heard commands such as those at one time or another in our lives. It is only common sense, after all, to see produce as much healthier than candy or cookies, particularly when the sweets in question are pre-packaged ones from the store. But just how healthy are all those apples, oranges, tomatoes and carrots we eat these days?

Much of the produce we buy in the supermarket is mass-produced, sold by farmers determined to get as many crops out of one season as humanly possible. As a result, the soil is severely depleted of its natural mineral content, thereby depleting the fruits and vegetables as well. The produce that are grown under these circumstances are certainly pretty enough, and sometimes even tasty enough, but they usually lack the nutrients that organically grown produce carry in abundance.

This is the reason why people can eat their veggies and fruits and think they’re eating right, yet still get sick a lot, or simply not feel as well as they should. So what are the other options for us consumers? You could take handfuls of vitamin and mineral supplements every day, but many of those products are chemically processed, and difficult to digest. Quite often they will go through the large and small intestines perfectly whole, or nearly whole. That’s like throwing expensive vitamin pills right into the toilet!

Vitamin supplements are a good idea, but it is also a good idea to choose them wisely. Pick out the varieties that are as natural as possible, preferably from organic health food supply stores. And choose the kinds that will dissolve rapidly in water. (Water soluble) Another option, of course, is to build yourself a greenhouse (if you are from a Northern area where the winters are cold) and grow your own produce. This, however, is a very expensive and time consuming process and if not done correctly it can lead to depletion of the vitamins and minerals anyway.

Probably the best option is to simply bite the bullet, and buy the more expensive, but also more healthy organically grown fruits and vegetables. These are the produce that contain the greatest amounts of viable vitamins and minerals and promote the best health to you, the consumer. Keep in mind, of course, that none of the above options are perfect, and nothing will help you achieve excellent health if you insist on harming your body with smoking, excessive drinking, and recreational drug use.

All in all, a healthy body is achievable, and is entirely up to you. You just have to think wisely when it comes to natural products, picking and choosing with care and a watchful eye on the list of ingredients. When you are doing all the right things, good health cannot be far behind.
