Metabolic Typing Diet

Did you know that there are cultures and people groups that exist today where our modern society epidemics such as heart disease, cancer and obesity are virtually unknown?

Many of these indigenous people live on things like fat blubber, bugs and insects, items in advanced societies such as our own would never find on a grocery list unless you are a participant on Survivor, let alone consider being part of a balance diet.

A doctor by the name of Weston Price spent extensive time studying the diets and lifestyles of indigenous people in comparison to our modern lifestyles and he observed that when these people adapted our modern diet and “microwave” lifestyle, health problems would develop prevalent to our modern way of living.

Throughout history people residing in different parts of the world require different amount of nutrients according to their living conditions and lifestyle including climate and geographical area, resulting in large variances of required nutrients. According to the FDA in order to lead a healthy lifestyle, avoiding diseases is to eat based on the four food groups or pyramid diagram with fruits and vegetables being the larger percentage of everyone's diet.

Truth be known, there is no universal diet, otherwise other people groups from other parts of the world would be just as healthy eating from our pyramid of recommended foods.

The trick is to discover your racial heritage and ethnicity and fill your diet with food people would eat in those regions. Sounds like a simple solution but for starters a lot of the foods our ancestors ate may not be found today or could be very costly, secondly there has been so much moving from one continent to the next and inter marriages it would be difficult to determine pure heritage and place of origin. When choosing ideal foods, lifestyle and activity levels also have to be considered.

Technology exists today to observe and analyze individual dietary needs. This process is called Metabolic Typing. Metabolic Typing takes the “by chance” risk out of determining which diet works best for you and allows you to customize according to your physiological needs.

Metabolism and the importance of metabolism in losing weight are commonly discussed among dieters and fitness buffs. So we already know that metabolism consists of all of our bodily systems and functions. We can control our metabolisms to a certain degree by the food we eat and our activity levels. Each cell in the body is designed to do its job perfectly when it has the right food at the right time. When eating according to your metabolic type and this lifestyle is applied, it is extremely effective in optimal health, preservation, preventing disease and even reversing chronic health disorders. It is proving to be more effective than other more well known approaches.

There are three metabolic categories: Carbo Type, Protein Type and Mixed Type. To determine an individual's metabolic type a self test is conducted to determine how your body reacts to certain food and how you feel when you eat those foods. Not all the questions may be answerable at the time the test is taken as some of the suggested eating practices that need to be monitored may be foreign, so experimentation and a food journal is required to obtain more accurate answers.

Once your metabolic type is confirmed an appropriate diet is not hard to live by as the foods within that particular type are often craved. It is the change in habit that may be the more difficult part.

There are many books on metabolic types and eating according to your metabolic type, however, “The Metabolic Typing Diet” by William Wolcott seems to prove most comprehensive on this subject. He also provides the metabolic self test and shopping list. If you are interested in reading more on this topic pick up William's book.
