Saluyot (Jute Leaves): The Wow Vegetable

Moreover, diets rich in vegetables will provide a milieu of non-nutritive substances which possess health protective benefits. Vegetables contain an abundance of antioxidants that have been associated with protection from chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and hypertension as well as other medical conditions.

Health experts recommend daily consumption of (3) servings of vegetables. One of the best vegetables that health experts recommend to be part of our dietary foods is Saluyot which can commonly be found at the backyard of the Filipinos in the Philippines or Jute leaves as in English term.

Do you know that Saluyot is one of the nutritious vegetables in the Philippines, according to a recent study conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)? Do you know that the secret behind the long life, good health and youthful looks among Ilokanos or Ilokanas in Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte in the Philippines is by simply eating the Saluyot or Jute leaves?

History reveals, Saluyot originated from Egypt which was wildly believed as the source of health and beauty among Egyptian royalties, including the famous Cleopatra.

Health experts discovered the Saluyot or Jute leaves are rich in Beta Carotene for good eyesight, iron for healthy red blood cells, calcium for strong bones and teeth and Vitamin C for smooth, clear skins, strong immune cells and speed wound-healing.

Saluyot leaves flourish almost anywhere in the Philippines and requires minimal care in cultivation and can be grown year round. Health specialists also found out that one half cup of Jute leaves approximately 45g contains 20k, 1.3 protein, 0.3g fat, 3.4g carbohydrates, 0.4g fiber, 87.3 mg calcium, 22.5mg phosphorus, 1330g, beta carotene or 222ug retinol equivalent (vitamin A), 1.0mg iron, 202mg thiamin, 0.04mg riboflavin, 0.3mg niacin and 10mg ascorbic acid or vitamin C. These also have anti-oxidant activity of 77 percent or o - tocopherol equivalent (vitamin E of 48.9.

In other words, Saluyot leaves contain all the vital nutrients needed by the body. The free radicals are the main culprit in cell deterioration of our body. These are the highly unstable by-products created by our body which uses oxygen. Because they are so unstable, they react easily with many chemicals inside the cells, and these reactions can cause tremendous devastation to the delicate cellular control mechanisms. When those mechanisms are destroyed, the cell may malfunction or die. These cumulative cell damages are the cause of the common degenerative diseases such as arthritis, hardening of the arteries, heart and kidney ailments.

However, Vitamins A, C and E which are present in Saluyot leaves "sponge-up" free radicals, scoping them up before they can cause cellular damage. According to health professionals, Vitamin A is important for proper formation of cells of the skin and mucous membranes and for night vision. They also affirm that Vitamin C also known as Ascorbic Acid can mainly be obtained from citrus fruit and vegetables like Saluyot. It is essential to the function of blood vessels, healing and the production of connective tissue. It is the most famous antioxidant and its countless benefits are well known.

Recent research studies have revealed that Vitamin C may lower the risk of developing cataracts and the other eye diseases. In some research findings, this antioxidant workhorse has helped lower blood pressure and cholesterol, prevent stroke and heart attacks. People who have sufficient levels of Vitamin C are not prone to asthma, arthritis, cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Meanwhile, Vitamin E is obtained from cold-pressed oils, wheat germ and whole grains. It is linked to numerous functions in the body including the manufacture of blood and to fertility. It may slow down aging, prevent infertility, protect from heart disease and certain cancer and enhances athletic performance.

The primary function of Vitamin E as antioxidant, it helps protect the body from cell damage which can lead to cancer, heart disease and cataracts as we get old. Vitamin E works hand-in-hand with other antioxidants like Vitamin C which provide protection from some chronic diseases. Vitamin E is found vegetable oils, salad dressings, margarine, wheat germ, whole grain products, seeds, nuts and peanut butter.

Saluyot or Jute leaves are also good to relieve headache. Drinking a decoction out of dried Jute leaves is good to fight dysenteria, stomach pain and ulcer. It also helps strengthen the immune system of children who are suffering from cough. The oils extracted from Jute leaves are effective to heal skin diseases and her fruit can cure inflammation.

Furthermore, regular consumption of Saluyot or Jute leaves can make you look younger, due to its high antioxidant activity and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in the face and body.
