Tasty Foods That Lift Your Mood

Types of food that lift your mood and provide energy.

Through the ages, scientists have identified certain foods and supplements that lift our spirits. Such foods and supplements have the ability to keep us in high spirits throughout the day. That explains why just by thinking about ice-cream can bring a smile to our faces. Here’s what to eat to keep you chirpy all day long.

Indulge in Complex Carbs

Complex carbs like wholegrain breads and muesli are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbs and provide a steady stream of energy through our body. They also stimulate the production of serotonin, a brain chemical that elevates one’s mood.

Daily Dosage of Vitamins and Minerals

Include citrus fruits such as orange or lemon as part of your daily diet, as they have high amounts of vitamin C. Studies have shown that people who consume high levels of vitamin C (up to 1,000mg daily) are less likely to crack under stress. Having calcium in your diet is equally important. By drinking a glass of milk every morning to hit your daily quota of calcium will help to improve premenstrual-related mood swings.

Satisfy that Sugar Craving

The Smell and Taste Treatment Research Foundation has found that the No. 1 scent that induces happiness is that of baked goods, especially vanilla, chocolate and caramel, which are associated with happy memories. The occasional dessert also triggers endorphins that send pleasure signals through the body.

As the saying goes, you feel what you eat. Be sure to eat right and start your day with a cheery smile.
