The Health Benefits of Carrots

The carrot is an excellent vegetable as it has both nutritional and medicinal values which are essential for our optimum health.

Page 1 of 3 | Prev 123Next»

Carrot is an edible root vegetable which is originated from Asia. It gains high respect in Western countries as it has been regarded as the best dishes for its outstanding nutritional and medicinal values. Even Dutch have listed carrot as one of their national dishes.

Carrot contains a very complete nutrition to provide our body the essential enzymes, vitamins and minerals. For each 100 gram, the carrot has 7.6 gram of carbohydrate, 0.6 gram of protein, 0.3 gram of fat, 30 milligram of calcium and 0.6 milligram of iron. Also, it is a good source of fiber, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, biotin, potassium and thiamine.

Carrot also offers an excellence source of beta-carotene, which is 3.62milligram (equivalent to 1981 international unit for the value of vitamin A) in each 100 gram of carrots. Many studies have shown that carrot provide us the highest amount of beta-carotene among the list of vegetables we always consume everyday.

The best thing of carrot is that it is easily assimilated by our body. Chinese practitioners said that carrot tastes sweet, and it is good for the health of spleen and stomach. It is also believed to improve impotence (lower sexual drive), sexual dysfunction, night blindness, long term cough (or call hundred days cough in Chinese medical prescription) besides strengthening kidney and eliminating excessive wind and cold in our body.

Carrot has proved its outstanding role in anti-cancer effect. The research revealed that people with lack of beta-carotene were more likely to have 2 times higher risk of cancer than normal people. It is wiser to eat an appropriate amount of carrot per day to prevent cancer. This is because beta-carotene in the carrot can be easily changed by our body into vitamin A, which is essential for healthy cell growth, strong immune system and protection against mascular degeneration (AMD).

The research also found that carrot contains bulk of folic acid, a group of vitamin B, which has good effect to fight against free radicals (substances that cause cancer) in our body. The lignin found in carrot too, helps to strengthen our immune system to fight against cancerous cells. Potash succinate, its anti hypertensive drug properties may also help to reduce the blood pressure. Therefore, it is also regarded as a good diet for hypertension's patient.

As carrot is fat-soluble substance, its nutrition is absorbed better with the presence of oil. Therefore, it is better to dip one drop of olive oil into a glass of carrot juice so that our body can effectively absorbed its nutrition.

Carrots like other foods do contain sugar which may give rise to the blood sugar. However, if carrots are consumed in an appropriate amount they won't give rise to an extreme blood sugar rise among people with blood sugar problems (both diabetic and hypoglycaemic). 8-ounce glasses of carrot juice per day have been seen as a successful cure among the patients who are terminally ill cancer. Your body appears to handling well with the natural occurring sugars found in carrot juice. There are still no scientific evidences supporting that appropriate consumption of carrot juice can cause negative impact to your body.  Nevertheless, I'd advise diabetic and hypoglycaemic to limit the intake of carrots because excessive intake of carrots may be detrimental to your health or may worsen your existing health condition.

Now, you may ask me, " How much carrot juice should I take, chan?" It's hardly to give you an accurate answer here since the intake of carrot juice  varies among the individuals. It's always wiser to consult your doctor for any dieting alteration, particularly among the patients, those who're engaging with diseases or those with serious health or physical problems. Basically, for a healthy person, it's recommended to take two to three 8-ounce glasses of carrot juice daily.

Carrot Food Therapy for Certain Diseases is Listed as Follows:

For Hypertension's Patient

Drink 100milliliter of fresh organic carrot juices everyday and it should be two servings per day. The therapy should proceed constantly for 30 days.

For Those Who Have Constipation

Blend fresh organic carrot juices with a juicer. Then, pour the juice into a glass. Dip a drop of olive oil into the glass. Mix it with an appropriate amount of royal jelly honey. Stir the mixture for a thorough mix. Each serving should be 80 milliliter, with every morning and night each.

For Those Who Have Night Blindness or Dry Dull Eyes

Carrots are ace.
I started eating them to help my skin but I am addicted to eating raw carrots, 6 today already! Since I started eating them I haven't touched any junk food at all and my skin is a lot better.
Also for anyone with eczema try lots of protein and STOP using your clothes washing powder! Just rinse everything in your machine, instead of using powder put your bed sheets and towells and socks etc through at 90 degrees, eerything else just normal tempds and after a few days you may be very surprised to see your eczema vanish.
This has worked for me, after ten years of suffering like an idiot. if you need to use powder then rinse at LEAST 3 times, but really, best not use it at all. I noticed the difference in DAYS, not weeks.

How long after the use of carrots and oranges, would the thyroid begin to enlarge? And would carrots alone help reduce the swelling?
#6 by CHAN LEE PENG, Apr 27, 2008
Hi Bev,

It depends on your body immune system, but it is encouraged not to take carrots and oranges together as the chemical reaction in these substances will lead to the smelling and enlargement of thyroid.

Carrots provide your body with essential nutrients but carrots alone do not cure the swelling or enlargement of thyroid. You've to adopt healthy lifestyle in your life. For examples: eat less meat, take more vegie(preferably organic), sleep well, care for personal hygience, exercise appropriately, limit stress, take appropriate amount of alkaline water and lastly you should care for your mental health like practising meditation or praying in your life.

Chan

is getting a good juicer and juice your carrots.Juices are
absorbed and feeding your thirsty cells in about fiteen minutes.Dont wait to long to drink your fresh juice or it will loose it\'s nutrional value. The best and safest way to find out
what other vegetables or fruits ( no oranges)you can mix with
carrot juice get yourself a book on juicing.good luck and good health to all of you,Karin

I combined carrots, orange and apple for making juice because my kids dont want the taste of carrot but how it possible that carrot and orange together are causing goiter? pls. advise
#14 by to # 13, Oct 14, 2008
As I've mentioned,

"This is because Thiocyanate compound in carrot will react chemically with substances in orange which can cause goiter (the enlargement of the thyroid). "

Please take note for your reference.

I'd suggest you to blend carrot with other fruits, but not orange.

Thanks and take care.

Chan

I know everyone has said that cooking the carrots is not good..But I actually heard that slightly cooking them is better because it breaks down the fiber, which traps the beta-carotene inside of it. Therefore, the beta-carotene is more bioavailable when the carrot has been cooked a little bit.

Does anyone have more info on this?

This is for those which suffer from hiv/aids (which is actually CANCER), 14 years with this type of cancer 8 years in the beginning with medication and NOW 6 year without medication (my choice). I eat fresh vegetable mainly carrots, spinach, and a green apple and put them in the juicer. i try to do this about 2 to 3 times a day, (not always organic, i cant afford them). i helps to clean the body out of toxin, builds the immune system, of which is the key i find to every disease. The immune system once restored, filters slowly the disease(s) out of the body.... you also need to drink plenty of distilled water (7-8 glasses 8 oz), excercise regularly (once a day),AND MUST PUT GOD FIRST, all else will follow. i have done this for several years now and look and feel better now than i ever have when on medication. Im 48 and look 38...it also helps my hair to grow thicker...i believe it helps to rid the body of the undesired yeast that causes a lot of problems to.... I hope this helps someone out there like it did me...and i havent had any colds either.....GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS (do you research...)

Carrots and orange juice combined cause swelling of the thyroid? Why is this? I would love to know the chemical reaction that causes this!

I remember reading a story of a dentist who became addicted to carrot juice and drank so much his skin turned yellow. The end result of his addiction was death, not because he drank carrot juice, but because he drank too much to the exclusion of other healthy foods.

Do carrots lose any nutritional value if they become dried out? I kinda figure that while they are in my mouth, the saliva moistens them up a little and they taste fine.
#21 by  CHAN LEE PENG, Feb 7, 2009
To Jenna,

Yes, of course. Like other foods, a dried carrot will have less nutritional value as compared to the fresh one.

To # 23,

The health benefits that you obtain vary according to a variety of fruits and vegetables since their trace elements, minerals, vitamins and other nutritional properties are in different proportion. However, any fruits and vegetables have their unique health benefits, the difference is marked by its ratio, attribute, type, characteristic, chemical composition and etc.

Dear Sir,

I what to know whether carrot contains sugar are not, and whether sugar patient can eat raw carrot ( with out cooking.

Please send your reply
#28 by  CHAN LEE PENG, Mar 23, 2009
To mukunda kumar,

Carrots do not contain any substance that may cause the rise of blood sugar level among the diabetes person. However, they're advised not to take too much carrots at a time which might be harmful to their health. Moderation is very important here. If they want to eat raw carrots, make sure that they're organically grown (free from chemical elements) to help curb the additional toxins from being dumped into their body.

Instead of eating raw carrot, why not you follow the remedy listed here (page 2) for diabetes person, which seems to be more effective to bring down the blood sugar level.

I hope this helps.

Chan

I am a professor at a carrot university. we do studys and experiments testing the substances that casue the rise of blood sugar. within the 7 year period that i have been teaching i have come across some brilliant discoveries. one of these, is that carrots DO contain subsatnces that will and are going to cause the rise of blood sugar. so read up on your facts Chan and please stop giving false information.
#30 by  CHAN LEE PENG, Apr 6, 2009
To Chinnhy ching chong

Please read my sentence carefully. I stated that "they're advised not to take too much carrots at a time which might be harmful to their health", which means moderation is a key factor here. From many clinical experimentations, they appear that a diabetic individual, or others who have poor blood sugar
control, would be able to drink carrot juice
in moderation. Of course, any fruits and vegetables if consumed in large amount may also give rise to the blood pressure. This is not restricted to carrots only. If one consumes carrot in moderation and in an appropriate amount, the blood pressure may have a slight rise due to the sugar content in the carrot, but it won't give rise to an extreme blood pressure. However, if any blood pressure rise due to the consumption of carrot with other underlying factors, and medications, it should be treated as different cases mentioned here.

Please don\'t be impolite to throw me a sentence \"
stop giving false information\" as it\'s cruel, illogical and unfair to treat those who have contributed for the well being of the humans.

Chan

Chan, this article is chock full of wonderful information about the health properties of carrots. While researching beta carotene, I found that the supplement is not healthy for smokers, but, as you point out, the organic carrot would be quite helpful. Thanks!

I think commenter 29 was pulling your leg. I have never heard of a carrot university??

hi. i'm on warfarin. i like to know if i take carrot juice does this affect my inr. how much do i have to take carrot juice since i like juicing carrot and apple ,so yummy.
#39 by  CHAN LEE PENG, Jun 18, 2009
To ummijami,

May I ask you why you've to be on warfarin? Is it because the instruction of a doctor?

You can take carrot juice but make sure that you don't take it together with warfarin. It's advisable to take the juice 3 hours after taking warfarin.

In your case, I'd suggest you to take carrot in moderation but not overconsumption. In regards to how much you should take the juice, please consult your doctor or registered nutritionist for a further advice. You're advised to do so, since they'll diagnose your health condition and advise you how to take the juice and what to do.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Chan
