The Picky Eater's Guide to a Healthier Diet

A reformed junk food junkie dishes the dirt on eating healthier foods to improve overall health, and actually enjoying it. Not all health food is tasteless and boring. It can actually be quite good.

Eating healthy food isn't just for those who love bland or boring dishes. Organic food has helped to improve my health, by mistake. When my back went out and going to the store was impossible, I ordered organic milk on Amazon.com, along with other food items. Since regular milk wasn't available, I decided to try the organic version, reluctantly. But, to my surprise, the organic kind tastes better, and instead of feeling bloated or uncomfortable afterwards, my energy improved, as did my health in general.

Drinking regular, store-bought skim milk all my life, the last thing I wanted to do was change my habit. But noticing a difference in my well-being after changing to organic milk, my horizons are broadened and trying organic foods wasn't something to ignore anymore.

Now that my health is improved, when at the grocery store, I still choose to buy organic items. Being sick taught me to be more conscious of what I put into my body, and stop taking it for granted. I've lost weight, and replaced store-bought baked goods with homemade bread.

My parents, who already are very health-conscious, told me about adding ingredients to my recipes such as ground flax seed, teff (a type of grain) and raisins. They mailed me a big care package of health food from their local market, so one by one; I reluctantly used each item in my baking, and to my surprise they tasted just fine. Now, I am happily living a more fat-free life and sneaking healthful ingredients into my food on a daily basis. By forcing myself to have better eating habits now, in my forties, it will hopefully make a difference in my overall health later in life.

If you are curious about adding healthful items to your diet, a good place to buy them is Amazon, where there are many varieties of grains, oils and dried fruit. If you live close to a health food market like Sweetbay or Trader Joe's, even better. There are many fine places to buy healthy ingredients nowadays. Try small amounts of items if possible, and see if they're to your liking.

That's what I did, and to my surprise, there isn't much that I haven't liked in all the products I've tried. Soy milk isn't for me, neither is carob substituted for chocolate. But, even if I use items that may be a little higher in fat here and there, overall, my food choices have drastically improved. Without exercising, my body feels good, and slimmer. My energy has improved and the spare tire around my waist is now almost gone.

If your health isn't what you want it to be, then do yourself a favor and give it a break by being more conscious about food you're eating. If, like me, you feel sick after eating a certain kind of food, try the organic alternative to it, and see if that helps. By adding nuts, dried fruit and homemade baked goods into my routine, I no longer need to eat fatty desserts and have no interest in eating anything overly sweet either.

Having recently lost two beloved family members due to the effects of diabetes and heart disease in the last year, it's in my best interest to eat right and prevent developing big diet-related problems later. Seemingly little changes in diet can mean a lot to your health. So give health food a try, your body undoubtedly will thank you for it and it just might keep the doctor away for years to come.
