Vegetarianism: an Elixir for Life

A challenge to non-vegetarian, if they can contradict the answer.

I'm a strict vegetarian as a result, I'm always taunted. I always felt embarrassed. I always used to think that why in our religion we are asked to have vegetarian diet and not the non-vegetarian diet. As all the non- vegetarians used to tell the various benefits of non-vegetarian food. I used to feel that there should be some very strong reason that why vegetarian food is preferred. Something which can make all other reasons appears trivial. I always used to search for that reason.

But, after surfing a lot of internet I have finally got a possible answer. The very reason of why we eat food is the answer to this question i.e. the survival of the human being on this earth.

How?

I have found on many websites which says that eating meat causes increase in the global warming. Probably all the readers must be knowing that if the temperature of our earth increase by few more degrees then our planet will become like any other planet. Then, probably the aliens (if they exist) from other planets will come and search for evidence of life as we search for evidence of life on mars and moon.

All this happens because of the concept which I had read in my ninth-tenth standard. I won't go in science of the concept. But, in the laymen terms I will say that from a plant to animal and from animal to animal only 1% of the total energy is transferred.

For example:

If we need 3000 calories per day and from each plant only 1000 calories is obtained. Then we need to eat only three plants.

But suppose if we eat beef rather than plants which can give say 3000 calories. Then most of you will think that the beef is a better option. But, I would like to say that for accumulating those 3000 calories we would have to feed cow at least 300 plants which means that we need more space and energy to feed one person.

Now greater the energy used, then greater will be the demand for energy and greater will be the burden on our natural fuel resources and hence greater would be the production of the greenhouse gases.

So, with greater consumption of meat, there would be more and more increase in greenhouse gases which will make the global warming condition worse.

Now, I think you all can conclude that by maintaining a vegetarian diet we are actually saving ourselves.

However, probably one may point out that what about the various diseases at which we all are at risk if eating of non-vegetarian food is stopped. To this point, I would like to say that many people in India are vegetarian and all those who take a balanced vegetarian diet with regular exercise always live a healthy life.

Afsah.....u r right, is saying that it is personal choice, but how far it is fair to kill innocant creatures mercilessly & then have a lavish meal? Isn\'t humanity defetaed? just visit once poultry or slaughter house & check the conditions in which animals are kept........when world is moving to veg., unfortunately indians are turning to non-veg..

A cow may be eating 300 plants but all the more its also used for many other purposes before killing it...it gives milk which is obviously how the energy is transferring

hey mounica,

as you are saying that we even get energy through milk...........but i wud like to say that to convert the grass into milk, a lot of metabolic steps are involved which is an energy intensive process where a lot of energy is wasted in breaking and reforming molecules and also during this process a lot of energy is lost in the atmosphere. so, still we are wasting a lot of energy.

mounica, please don't take it personally, i'm very thankful that u ppl really give ur comments as this will also help me to understand the topic in lot more better way. since. it might be possible that i wight have skipped some pt. which cud be put forth later while answering ur comment.

hey ..wot the hell are you talking about....dont eat beef...i guess you should go & try to find some other options to save energy....the most pollutive things are the automobiles & every mode of transport & the factories...if they can be made to save about 1 percent of energy that would be hundred times more than wot u wud be saving by not eating beef...& if u are very worried about global warming go & plant some trees in the areas where there is deforestation & go & stop the people who are cutting trees... & by the way how many trees have u planted so far....

i'm a non veg turned veggie and now i'm proud of myself that i'm helping to conserve energy on the earth and preventing global warming so that our following generation can live. i hate greedy humans killing innocent animals just for their taste buds.

someone said above to plant more plants, i have started to do so. i hope he will also do the same.

i'm happy to see this topic that can make people aware.

can anyone please answer the frequently sked questions by non vegetarians, especially by that Dr. Zakir Naik?
Some of his questions simply leave me answerless as to why we should oppose non-veg.Now since it has been proven n evebn vedas say thta plants too have life, aatma then hw are we justified in eating them?Next thing is if we say that they have fewer senses then does that permit us to kill a person who is in comma and has very almost no senses working?

Please answer the questions...i ll be eagerly waiting for the response. If possible reply on my mail id-its aasthadivya_613@yahoo.co.in
