Why I Drink Only Water

I don’t drink soda, beer, or juice. I really love water.

I have recently celebrated my 30 th birthday. For my entire adult life, and most of my childhood, I have preferred to drink water. So many people seemed to be surprised that I actually like to drink water. To me, this is just the norm, but it really starts a conversation when I am out and about or ordering at a restaurant.

As the advertisers and dietitians do their best to make water appear more appealing, several folks assume that I have consciously made the choice to drink water solely for health reasons. Although I recognize and appreciate the fabulous health benefits that drinking water provides, this is not the main reason I choose to drink water.

You may be thinking to yourself that a glass of water here and there is not that bad. Well, I totally agree. In fact, I love to drink water so much that I refuse a soda pop when out and about. I may let a glass of Sunny Delight pass over my lips on occasion if I am feeling sick or under the weather. Vegetable or fruit juices are not my thing either. I really just like water.

Too often, I have people who have come to know me who wonder what it is about water that is so appealing. Often others will tell me that water tastes so plain and boring to them. To me, I find the taste of tea to be very strong and unappealing. The carbonation found in Pepsi, Coke, or Mountain Dew completely turns me off. I absolutely hate the tingling and bubbling in my mouth. As for water, I do not even drink it with fruity flavors or lemon.

Just a cool refreshing glass of water is what I order when eating out, even with a fancy meal to celebrate an anniversary or birthday. Sparkling water does not appeal to me either. I simply like the taste, or lack thereof, from water that has been filtered and clean. I do not ask for an expensive bottle of Evian, but I do not want a glass of chunky well water either.

Have you ever noticed how well a glass of water quenches your thirst? You just can't get that delicious satisfaction from a cup of coffee…or at least I can't.

As a child, I did enjoy a glass of cold milk, whether it was white or chocolate. Today, I can tolerate a sip or two of chocolate milk, but then again, what woman doesn't love chocolate? White milk is simply out of the question unless it is used for cooking or sparingly on cereal. I guess my tastes have matured from those days gone by.

When friends and acquaintances ask why I love water, it isn't because I am too cheap to pay for a pop when I am out. I love saving money, but if I wanted a milk shake to drink, for example, I would purchase it. I simply prefer the water as my beverage of choice.

Just because I drink water doesn't imply that I am on a health kick, overly cheap, or boring. I simply like the flavor and refreshing nature of a cool glass of water.
