This study is a case presentation the principal issues of memory loss and neuropathy. A 74-year-old patient is used as a respondent for the study. The patient is a retired attorney. He is single and separated from his family. He doesn't smoke but he enjoys drinking alcoholic beverages. In his current age he found out he could no longer do most of the things he used to do like playing tennis. Several symptoms have been noticed such as deformation of both his hands, and “strange feelings” in the soles of his feet when walking.
His alcohol intake has become to close to addiction. He drunk much anytime of the day. He barely even had a hang over. When his drunk the whole evening, he's fine the next morning.
He had undergone surgery to stabilize some of the sensations of weakness and paresthesis in his hands. However this did not return his hands normal function.
He drank much of heavy liquor daily. Eventually, he has noted some trouble remembering names and he feels he does not think as quickly as used to. He has also developed hypertension and gastroesophageal reflux disease which led him to take some medications.
On the recent neurologic examinations, he was found to be just fine though he spoke slowly and had a moderate hearing loss. He's got normal blood pressure, regular pulse and did not show findings on liver disease of skin problem associated with alcohol abuse. His cranial nerves were normal. His blood count has been normal. Unlike years ago, when his Vitamin B12 levels were below the borderline it has been back to normal.
In some ways, he had decided to lessen his alcohol intake until he has slowly able to adopt a life without it. He even thought he definitely needed to retire from his habit. He took the advice from his doctor and his daughter. Though, he's definitely going to develop a memory loss, he again started to do the things he used to do. He has begun a single step by running around his house, consistently reading something.
The basis of the study is based on a story of a health problem of a patient. The testimony of the patient serves as the data. Findings during certain periods are gathered together for comparison. The patient's condition during the years he indulge himself into alcoholism was observed to be worse. Once alcohol gets into the system of the person, you can no longer get off its side effects though. When he realized how dreadful his condition was and started to change his habits, at least he had normalize his tremor and lessen his sufferings due to his ailments. Either due to his age or due to his habits, the author pointed out that alcoholism has a big effect on the patient's health. If this is true for one person, then this could be applicable to other persons as well. Thus, the point of the study is to give the audience health information (specifically when there is too much intake of alcohol) by getting a certain person who has experienced the bad effects of alcohol.
This study is persuasive. It is true that alcohol has been one source of health problems (in this study, memory loss and neuropathy) especially when a person gets old. Normally, an old person is weaker than he has ever been. Besides these ailment can be in any person at any age. But based from the study, a person addicted to alcohol is even weaker when he gets old. This is true for some people based from observations. However, this study could debatable. Some people could claim that hard liquor could be their "fuel" to get going in which they could heat up whenever there is alcohol in their life. The hypothesis could be stronger if he (the author) gets more patients with related conditions. It could also be even better if actual medical results are presented for verification purposes. Therefore the study needs further observations for better argument.
