Some patients, for various reasons, prefer “natural” or “herbal” treatments to prescription or non-prescription medications. In some patients, these treatments can be helpful. It should be noted, however, that the government does not regulate herbal treatments for purity, quality, safety, or effectiveness.
It should also be noted that herbal remedies can have adverse effects, and can interact with each other and with medications. You should always inform your physician of any herbal products that you use. Below are some of the herbal treatments that may be useful in the treatment of inflammatory conditions:
Ginger
Ginger has been shown to be useful in the treatment of arthritis, stomach problems, and poor circulation. It is available in capsule form, and up to 2 grams per day in divided dosages is recommended. It is also available as a tea, and up to 4 cups per day should be used. Ginger should not be used if you take blood thinners or if you have gall bladder disease. Indian Frankincense (Boswellia)
Indian frankincense is available in 300 and 400 milligram capsules, and can be taken 3 times a day. Like ginger, it helps both arthritis as well as stomach problems. Turmeric
This spice is related to ginger, and has similar anti-inflammatory effects. It is also useful for stomach problems. Take 3 400 or 600 milligram capsules per day. As with ginger, do not take turmeric if you are taking blood thinners or if you have gall bladder disease.
Bromelain
This enzyme derived from pineapple has anti-inflammatory and pain-killing effects. Take one 500 milligram tablet three times per day between meals. Do not take bromelain if you take blood thinners or if you are allergic to pineapple.
