Acne 101: Things You Need to Know About Acne

Pimples or acne usually occur during puberty and is usually characterized as small, red, and round swelling in the skin mostly in the face and sometimes in the chest, back and arms.

Causes of pimples/acne are as follows:

  • During puberty, there is an increase in hormones that can cause the sebaceous glands in our skin to swell and to produce more oil which can plug our pores causing the outbreak of pimples or acne. Basically, the oilier our skin the higher chances of acne.
  • There are people who are born with oily skin, as such; heredity also plays a big role. People who belong to this group usually suffer from acne even during their 30's or even their late 40's.
  • Some people also have allergic reactions to certain foods, medicines, and even the weather. Most of the time, the skin's reaction to these stimuli is increase oil production in our skin or sudden outbreak of pimple-like rashes.

What to do when you have acne:

  • Over-the-counter anti-acne medicines are very much available. These products can help heal and prevent acne.
  • Washing your face (or affected areas) at least twice a day is a good way in clearing up the excess oil in your skin.
  • Shampoo your hair regularly. The dirt and bacteria in your hair may transfer to your face which can aggravate your acne.
  • Avoid stress and sleep well. Too much stress and lack of sleep can make your skin oily and more prone to acne.
