Exercise on an Empty Stomach for Weight Loss

Obesity has become the problem of modern times. People are striving hard to achieve weight loss and keep themselves fit. Many people have a wrong idea that doing exercise on an empty stomach can bring them better results.

Nowadays women spend more on lips and hips! Overweight and obesity have already become major contributors to their unnecessary worries. Modern women are very particular about their body fitness. Working women like to look slim, trim and active. Hence they involve themselves in various exercises which can reduce their hips and keep them trim! I have seen many of them sweating away in the gym to lose their weight. But it is a very shocking scene to look at these men and women involved in vigorous exercises with their empty stomachs.

Why empty stomach exercises?

The reason they state for doing exercises in empty stomach is that it will help weight loss. Since weight loss is their goal, they say it is most advantageous to eat after exercising. The reason is that if the stomach is empty without anything eaten recently, they are most likely to utilize the stored energy during the exercise session rather than the food they have just consumed.

Eating just before the exercise will affect the body

Immediately after a meal, significant blood flow is directed toward the stomach to facilitate the digestive process. If you involve in exercise just after eating, either running or strength training, blood flow must be redirected to working muscles. Therefore, the digestive process will be affected and many people may experience cramping in the abdominal area. Abdominal cramping after eating may lead more often with cardiovascular exercise and this will further lead to cardiovascular problems.

It is advisable to eat starch and sugar foods (Carbohydrates) earlier on in the day (at least two hours or more, before your exercise) to give you energy for the gym and your body will burn the Carbohydrates as energy when you work out. Beware if you do not have the carbohydrate stores to fuel your workout, your body will burn muscle instead. This will result in yielding opposite effects.

Eat after exercise

If you are trying to loose weight, it is not a good idea to eat and then go down the gym because what your body will be doing basically is burning what you just ate. Consequently, after one or two hours of exercise you will go back home with the same weight and more tired! So it is better to go down the gym with some refreshing drink and then come back and have some nutritious low fat low sugar high protein food enriched with vitamins and minerals. If you eat Carbohydrates after your exercises, your body will not break them down, and the starch foods will instead turn into fat, so do not eat them after physical activity.

Never on an empty stomach

It is advisable to start the gym or exercises after taking light refreshment rather than going with an empty stomach which can be followed by a healthy nutritious limited diet. Drinking plenty of water is suggested as it will compensate the water loss through perspiration. You may prefer a sports drink which may give you energy without making you feel sick. Doing exercises on an empty stomach will cause sluggish metabolism and poorer fitness. After exercise, it is very important to eat within two hours to help replace lost glycogen and boost your metabolic rate vital for weight loss.
