High Fat, Low Carb Diet: Day 9 – Nuts, Nuts, Nuts

Nutty about nuts. My diet struggle diary today concentrates on my favorite snack.

There is one problematic aspect of high fat diets. Most of the time the amount of fibre you will take in from your food will be less than you need. An obvious solution to this issue is to just buy some supplements and that's done.

However if you are like me and you neither like to take pills or meds, nor experience bowel problems there is another solution. Yes, you have guessed it (I promise not to make any more of these titles...) - it's nuts. Because they contain plenty of fat with small amounts of carbohydrates, and quite a high percentage of fibre, they are the ideal hunger quencher.

Nuts as snacks

For a high fat dieter (especially a beginner), nuts are a real blessing... We all know sooner or later the cravings will come. The healthy little snack can easily stop them. They are also very handy if you have to stay at the office etc. between meals. Not to mention if you eat just to do something with your fingers and jaw, nuts will be ideal to curb those habits.

There is one downside though, unfortunately because of their size, nuts can be easily over snacked on. It's fine to eat some, but a whole bucket will be a definite no - no.

Nutrition in nuts

It is said that nut consumption might help maintaining a healthy heart. Different kinds of nuts are good for various reasons.

  • Walnuts - contain valuable omega-3 fatty acids

  • Almonds - are rich in vitamin E

  • Peanuts - will supply you with vitamin B

  • Cashews - these you should be careful with, as they contain a high carb to fibre ratio

Nuts in general contain loads of fat, protein and fibre, which is all good for a low carb, high fat diet.

Fibre and nuts

There is one more reason to be weary of eating too much nuts. Exactly because they contain so much fibre, if you over indulge you might expect to see just the opposite of what you were trying to prevent from happening. And "no toilet" might turn into "toilet way too often".

Nut allergies

With all the nut excitement I am displaying here, unfortunately many people might be allergic to nuts, especially peanuts.
