Most people associate a high fat diet with Dr. Atkins. This is a slight misconception as there are plenty of high fat, low carb diets around, but today I want to say a few things about the Atkins variation.
Atkins diet is mostly perceived as eggs and bacon diet. This is not true, however it does encourage these produce - which is no surprise to anyone reading up on high fat food, as eggs are a brilliant source of various nutritional elements. The problematic part about this diet is the lack of established proportions. Eat whatever you want from a selected product group is not necessarily the best option.
I don't know how typical I am, but without extra motivation my food becomes quite monotonous... I love chicken, so I'll have chicken for a week, just because I can... After I get bored, I'll move to another food, and have steak for a week. You can see the pattern there.
At some point I learned that actually consuming too much protein can be harmful too and high fat diets are called high fat for a reason. There has been an experiment conducted on Arctic explorers. One group was fed lean meat, the other group consumed meat with fat on it. The surprising outcome was that the lean meat group actually started getting sick after a couple of days, while the second group experienced no problems at all. This experiment was based on observing Eskimo diets - which consist mainly of animal meat and fats.
The diet I would like to follow has been devised by Dr. Kwasniewski called the Optimal Diet. It puts a lot of emphasis on the carbohydrate, fat and protein proportions, with more protein allowed in the initial, weight loss phase, and less in the maintenance one. Though would like is the key phrase here, as it still takes quite a bit of an effort to stick to the diet.
However it seems that the Atkins diet might be trying to change the way they are perceived, as there shiny new website seems to try to deflect the 'eat all you can' accusations.
