Our weight is determined by the amount of calories that we consume via our diet and the amount of calories we burn via daily activities and exercise. It follows that in order to control our weight, we must control our calorie intake and calorie burn through a proper diet plan and an exercise program.
That is of course easier said than done. In addition, a lot of confusion is created by various diet plans promoted by various individuals and groups. Similarly market is full of different types of exercise programs and equipment. How do we choose what is right for us, so that we can shed those unnecessary pounds, fast?
Any rational program should have a regular and properly created diet plan with regular meals. We must also have the determination to stick to it religiously. Diet should consist of foods that give us a balanced mix of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and other nutrients, as recommend by heath professionals. By cutting out our consumption of wrong amounts and types of food at wrong times, such a diet plan will reduce our calorie intake drastically.
It is important that no particular food group is reduced in relation to others as some diets plans recommend. While popular “low fat diets” reduce the fat intake that does not necessarily reduce the calorie intake. Reducing excessive fat intake may allow us to stay healthier and prevent certain diseases, but in order to reduce our weight, we must pay attention to the number of calories in our diet plan, not just to the amount of fats in it. Similarly there are problems with diets low on carbohydrates, popularly known as “low carb diets”.
While such diets will have fewer calories and we may lose a few pounds early on, it will not be sustained. Our bodies adjust to the new diet and our internal metabolism will slow down so that we burn lower amount of energy. After that a low carb diet will only make us feel tired as well as hungry all the time. In addition if we abandon the low carb diet, we will gain weight quickly, as our now lowered metabolism will only burn lower amount of calories.
In other words, a sustainable diet plan will not excessively lower our calorie intake; instead it will maintain the required calorie intake by regularizing and balancing our meals. We can then burn off the extra weight through exercise.
In order to burn that excess weight we must have a regular schedule of exercises. We must concentrate more on exercises that increases our heart rate and employs muscles throughout the body, such as swimming, running, walking, and aerobics, instead of muscle building exercises such as weight lifting.
To lose weight quickly we must also, as mush as possible, make a conscious effort to exercise our muscles during our everyday activities as well, such as using the stairs instead of the elevator.
If we regularize our lives with a proper diet plan and an exercise regime, we will not only lose weight fast, but will also be able to maintain that lower weight.
