How to Use Food Portion Control to Lose Weight

Are you a mindless eater who often eats more calories than planned? If so, you may benefit from these tips for food portion control.

Are you a mindless eater? Do you sometimes find yourself snacking out of the bag without any regard for how much you're actually eating? If so, it may be time to add some serious portion control in your daily diet. Studies have shown when people eat out of a bag or multi-portion container they almost always end up eating more than if they eat controlled portions.

Here's how to painlessly add portion control to your diet to help you lose those pounds:

  1. Eat From a Smaller Plate

Recent studies have shown that people who eat their meal from a smaller plate, consume less calories than those who eat from a larger one. If you have super size plates in your house, consider downsizing them and watch the pounds melt away.
  2. Learn to Recognize What a Serving Size Is

A 3 ounce serving of meat should be about the size of a deck of playing cards. Believe it or not, a half cup of ice cream is only half the size of your average baseball, while a serving of fruit and vegetables is usually about the size of a full baseball. Learn to recognize serving sizes by sight and you'll go a long ways towards controlling your food intake.. If you still have a problem with overeaeting, consider investing in a gram scale for weighing food portion sizes. You can also buy plates that have been divided into specific sized slots for portion control.
  3. Buy Portion Controlled Snack Packs

We're fortunate to live in an age where snack manufacturers make portion controlled snacks. You've probably seen them in your grocery aisle in the form of packages containing 100 calories worth of cookies, crackers etc. These can be a great way to control your intake of snack foods. Take advantage of this and you can still enjoy your favorite cookies and snacks without all the guilt.
  4. Try Spraying on the Flavor

Many people will choose a healthy, low calorie salad as their entrée and then douse it with half a bottle of high calorie dressing. This is not the best way to promote weight loss. Why not buy one of the new salad spritzers where you can spray on your dressing to get the taste without all those calories? You can also find spray margarines in your grocery store's dairy aisle. These can enhance the flavor of your food without adding excess calories.

As you can see, there are a variety of options available to help you control your food portions. Why not give some of these tips a try so you can still enjoy your favorite foods without blowing your healthy diet?
