Marching Into The Peace Corps, pt 24: Dying To Be Thin

(contd.)

Last week there was a medical story that hit the news saying one of the biggest problems we have in the United States is a dramatic increase in binge eating. Most people also know a lot of people with a binge problem will also purge. So we've got both sides of the coin – either we starve or we stuff. One side effect no one talks about with purging is that the stomach acids eat the enamel off your teeth over time. Ever notice a super skinny person who has this problem also has really bad teeth?

It's really sad how we either starve or stuff ourselves, and yet this isn't just an “American” problem, it's a world problem. If you ever take the time to read newspapers from other parts of the world, you will see they talk openly about their eating and bad health problems, too. It's just more noticeable here in the United States because when we sneeze, the world catches a cold – it all reverberates outward like ripples in a pond. We've accidentally exported our bad eating and dieting habits to the four corners of the world. If this wasn't true, then Spain wouldn't have banned the ultra-thin models, and yet fashion houses all over the world are now making DOUBLE and TRIPLE size ZERO fashions!

I miss the days when a size 8 was a size 8, not a modern day size 5. It was easier to shop, and it kept you in touch with your true size. Fashion houses are catering to women who want smaller numbers on the tags, but weigh too much to fit into a true size.

The other day I read about an active woman who watched her weight; one day she got on the doctor's scale and it said she gained 12 pounds. The nurse called out her weight and she thought the nurse was calling out someone ELSE's weight! I wonder if she didn't notice it because the games with the sizes. You always hear women say, “…but I've ALWAYS been a SIZE SIX…how could I have gained weight and still fit into size six clothes?!” This might explain how most women never see the pounds creep on – I didn't!

It's high time we return to true and accurate sizes and give up this stupid notion of double and triple zero sizes just to make our egos feel better. If you're fat, admit it – then do something about it, and I don't mean demand the fashion houses make a size 12 pair of pants and put a size 2 label in them. Too many girls are dying to be thin, and yet we're an incredibly obese society.

If we're not binge eating, we're vomiting. If we're not starving, we're stuffing ourselves and creating a worldwide obesity epidemic. We're in big trouble and it's time we stop lying to ourselves when we're the ones setting the standards too high for 99.8% of the population to reach. We're responsible for the eating disorders through advertising mixed messages. “We want ultra thin models to show off our clothes!” “Take this diet pill and it will make you stick thin in 30 days!” “Do you want to super size your order?”
