Seven Ways to Cut Salt From Your Diet

A low sodium diet can help protect your heart from hypertension.

  • First, you should keep track of where you salt sources are coming from. Read the ingredients and ask about the salt contents of food.
  • Shop for low-salt labels. Watch your snacks, those wavy chips better have a low-sodium twin.
  • If you do have a high sodium meal balance it with high potassium foods.
  • Stay away from canned foods. Eat fresh vegetables.
  • Let the chef know. Request no salt when you're out.
  • Use an alternative seasoning. Garlic, curry, pepper and vege-salt (low sodium) are a few.
  • Lastly, if you need salt, add it at the end of your cooking. This way you need a lot less.

These are a few ideas. Overall, low salt is not the only defense against hypertension but it is a smart start.
