How to Reduce the Sugars in Our Diet

How I successfully lost weight without being deprived of my favorite drink.

This was the beginning of my weight loss journey. Here is one of the easiest step I have used to successfully lose 2kg in 3 weeks.

I started by being more conscious about my sugar intake. The easiest place to start was my sweet tooth.

If you love the sweet fizzy drinks, soda to some of you, like I do, this is a cheat I use. I dilute the drink - yep, I would pour a full cold glass of soda and gulp it down. Then my second glass would go down at a slower rate. I would usually finish a 1.5 litre bottle a day. In a week, I would usually finish about 4 bottles.

Now, what I do is dilute 1 part to 4 parts water. Of course I did not start that way! It was a gradual process. I started with 3 parts soda and 1 part water. It was not too bad, it still had the taste of the drink. Then after a couple of days, when I got use to the taste, I reduced the soda and increased the water proportion. Again I stuck with it until my taste buds got used to it before further diluting it. But finally I got to a point where the drink tasted "flat", so what I did was to substitute unsweetened tonic water or any bottled water with the carbonated fizz instead of just plain water. Then I got my "kick" back. Success!

Currently, I finish 1 bottle of soda and 3 bottles of 1.5 litres of soda water. To keep myself from pouring out too much cola, I took a marker and drew a mark on the outside of the glass where the quarter mark is, I will use the same glass every time I drink soda. And when the line gets faded from repeated washing, I will redraw the line.

It was a good start to my program as I began to feel my waist-band loosening. The best part being that I did not feel I was deprived from lack of my favourite drink. So I took my next step, reducing the amount of sugar in my coffee and tea drinks.

I use 2 sugars for my coffee and tea with cream. Again, a gradual process of reducing my sugar level, until my taste buds tell me to it is acceptable, I reduce it further. I drink 1 cup of coffee in the morning and 1 cup of tea in the afternoon. So it works out to 4 sugars a day. In a week, I would have consumed 28 lumps of sugar. Today, I am happy to tell you, I take my coffee and tea WITHOUT any sugar and instead of using cream, I use low fat milk!

So, I have not given up my coffee and tea and my favourite soda drinks, I am still enjoying my drinks but with LESS sugar. Stay with me as I share with you my next step. Watching out for oils and fats.
