My 2nd Pregnancy That Was Not

I was so certain I was pregnant with my second baby. But after the miscarriage and hearing of the doctor's explanation, I was perplexed.

My FDLM (first day of last menstruation) was March 8, 2008. Last week of March my dermatologist prescribed Doxycycline antibiotic for my casual pimple breakouts after making sure that I was not with child. I was very sure then, but not after I checked on the Woman Calendar installed in my PDA that my husband and I, you know, done it several times on my most fertile days.

And I have taken eight antibiotic capsules already. My next monthly period would come on April 4, 2008. But two days after my supposed “monthly visitor” did not come; I was then suspecting I was pregnant. And the test I took affirmed my suspicion. I was like, "huh, ah okay". My eldest is already two years old and maybe it was the right time to have another baby. I was ecstatic then. But in every time that I move around, like doing the usual stuff, my lower tummy would hurt a little and it's like making contractions of its own. And the baby did not like the usual jeans and high heels I usually wear to work every day. My tummy was giving signs that the baby inside was not comfortable, plus the abnormal painful sensations, I immediately called my doctor.

Unfortunately, she was unavailable. I was referred to another doctor. I was scheduled to visit the next day. After I hung up the phone, I went to the ladies' room. There, I noticed little red marks in my shield - blood! So I thought, well, maybe it was just nothing. I have heard of other pregnant women experiencing slight bleeding but still delivered the baby anyway. But later that night, after my husband and I came home from a prayer meeting, I was already bleeding. But it was not alarming since the bleeding was only comparable to my regular menstruation. And I was like, if the baby has deformities from the antibiotic I took and if it really has to go, then, so be it. It was April 11, 2008. The bleeding went on for more than a week, which was unlikely, since my menses usually last for four days the most.

The doctor scheduled me for a transvaginal ultrasound. The result presented my uterus was already empty without any traces of the miscarriage and that a Beta HCG pregnancy test was required to rule out ectopic pregnancy. If the B HCG titer is more than 500,000 then I was having an ectopic pregnancy. But if it's lower than that, then I was not pregnant after all. My titer was only 2, which meant I was not preggy, I just had a delayed menstruation, the doctor explained. Huh? Then what about the positive pregnancy test, the sensations I had, and how can she explain the prolonged "menstruation" I had?

Puzzling, isn't it?
