Tips for a Healthy Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a miracle, no matter if it was planned or a surprise, if you’re married or not, or whether you feel you are ready for it or not. It can make you or break you. My advice is to take it one day at a time. Here are my top ten tips for a healthy pregnancy.

  1. Eat a healthy diet : Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, meats, grains, dairy and etc. Eat many smaller meals and carry healthy snacks with you in your purse.
  2. Make time to rest : Everyday, even if you can’t nap, make sure that you can at least put your feet up. Plus, it would be nice to pamper yourself with that luxury, after all, you are supporting a life.
  3. Get some exercise : If you can, go for a walk, it’s a wonderful way to get your heart pumping, and to get some fresh air. If you can’t then an excellent way to get exercise is taking trips up and down the stairs or playing with your other children.
  4. Stay hydrated : Always make sure to drink plenty of water, or carry a water bottle around with you. Try to stay away from excessive amounts of caffeinated drinks like soda and coffee. All natural fruit juice can be very good for you, as long as there isn’t a lot of extra sugar added. Try to drink a glass of vitamin D and Calcium fortified orange juice everyday to help give you that extra boost of vitamin C.
  5. Take your prenatal vitamins : I can’t stress the fact enough, prenatal vitamins carry many of the vitamins and nutrients that your baby needs to grow. Also, if your diet lacks a certain nutrient, the vitamins will make up for the difference.
  6. Cats : If you have cats in the household, you need to be very careful about toxoplasmosis. It is a disease that can be transmitted through cat feces. Pregnant women and small children are most susceptible to it. So if you can, have somebody else scoop it. If not, be very careful. Wear a mask and long gloves, and make sure to wash you’re hands as well.
  7. Buy a book : A pregnancy and labor book can be very helpful, especially if you are a first time mom. It can offer you tips and advice on how to keep your pregnancy and baby healthy. It can also help you to see week by week what your baby is doing in you’re womb.
  8. Get enough folic acid : Your baby needs Folic acid to grow the way he or she should. Your prenatal vitamins provide a substantial amount of it, but certain fortified cereals can also help.
  9. Pamper yourself : Rest, take naps, do your hair, buy a new maternity outfit! You deserve it. Go out and play with the kids, spend a quiet home alone with the hubby. Try to do anything and everything that will make you happy and relaxed.
  10. Stay positive : I know its hard some mornings waking up after a hard night with no sleep due to your huge physique and a kicking baby. It can be tough, but stay positive. It will be over soon enough and you will miss being pregnant.
