Burning Sensation in Stomach

Dyspepsia, the medical term for a burning sensation in the stomach, is a common for people of all ages. Over the counter medications may work in many cases. For serious cases, prescription pharmaceuticals may need to be used. If you have severe or chronic burning, then you may want to speak with a medical professional about your sensations. It is possible that you are experiencing symptoms of a serious medical condition. Dyspepsia may be associated with heartburn, acid reflux, nausea, lack of appetite and gas.

Causes of a Burning Sensation in Stomach

1. Excessive Stomach Acid

Excessive stomach acid may case a burning sensation in the stomach. This is most commonly caused because of diet. Acid reflux and heartburn are often associated with this problem. Fatty foods, especially animal products, are one of the leading causes of excessive stomach acid. Sugary and carbonated drinks are another cause. If you eat a diet heavy in meats, diary and sugars, then remove them for a few weeks to determine if they are the cause of your discomfort.

2. Fatty Foods

Fatty foods may remain longer in the stomach and cause discomfort. This may be associated with bloating, gas and heartburn. Deep fried foods, greasy foods, and butter may be causing your discomfort. Remove these products from your diet for a few weeks to determine if they are causing the burning sensations.

3. Spicy Foods

Spicy foods such as onions, garlic, peppers and hot sauce, are common factors that lead to dyspepsia. These are often associated with heartburn. If your diet is heavy with spicy foods, or you enjoy eating extremely spicy meals, then this may be a reason for the burning sensation that you are experiencing. If you find that your bathroom experiences are unpleasant, then you may be consuming too many spicy foods.

4. Food Allergies

Allergies may be a cause for unpleasant digestion. Other signs of allergic reactions may be present as well. Allergies may manifest themselves at different times during your life. It is possible to become allergic to something that you were not allergic to before. If you find yourself having uncomfortable sensations whenever you eat a certain food, then you may have developed an allergy.

5. Stomach Ulcers

Stomach ulcer are open sores on your stomach lining. Stomach ulcers may be caused by medical conditions. They may also become agitated or sensitive due to certain foods, especially the foods noted above. They may also be painful when you have not eaten recently. Alcohol consumption is a major trigger for ulcers. Stress may cause ulcers to become more problematic. If you have a history of ulcers, then you may want to speak with a medical professional about your concerns.

6. Stomach Flu Or an Infection

Stomach flu and stomach infections may cause this pain. Other symptoms will be present as well, such as vomiting and nausea. This can be due to consuming contaminated food or being exposed to someone else who has the flu or an infection. Diarrhea and gas may be present as well. Dehydration may be present, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea. If you believe that you have one of these conditions, then speak with a medical professional immediately.

7. H. Pylori Infection

This bacteria is responsible for damaging the lining of your stomach. It is commonly found inside of people who have ulcers. Sever infections may lead to diarrhea, vomiting or black stool. This bacteria exists in many people’s bodies without causing an infection, but it may infect ulcers. If you have ulcers and are experiencing extreme symptoms, then speak with a doctor.

8. Medication

Certain medications, such as anti-inflammatory medication and non-steroidal drugs, may lead to burning sensations. Aspirin and Ibuprofen are non-steroidal drugs and should be infrequently used. If you find that you are using drugs to reduce the pain of headaches or other bodily pains, then speak with a medical professional about your pains. Pain medication is intended to be used as a temporary measure, not a daily regimen.

9. Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is important, but it may lead to a variety of unpleasant and painful sensations. One of which is dyspepsia. If you are treating cancer, then your doctor has discussed these considerations with you. You may find that you doctor is already prescribing you medication to care for your symptoms. However, if you are experiencing waves of severe dyspepsia, then speak with your doctor about your concerns.

10. Stress

Stress may lead to digestive problems. Burning sensations in the stomach and gas are commonly associated with stress. Because the body is unable to properly function due to stress, the stomach may be unable to properly regulate the acid levels in your stomach. Stress may also lead to the development of ulcers. If you are experiencing daily stress or extreme stress, then attempt to remove the stress from your life.

Treatment for a Burning Sensation in the Stomach

1. Medical Attention

If you are experiencing extreme dyspepsia and other symptoms that lead to you believe that you are experiencing a medical problem, then speak with a medical professional. They will be able to run tests and give you the medication that you need. Allergy tests are available as well. You can also receive a blood test to determine if your diet needs to be adjusted.

2. Alter Your Diet

If you are not experiencing a major medical problem, then it is likely that your diet is at fault for your symptoms. Reduce animal fats, animal proteins, spicy foods, processed foods, excessive sugars, carbonated drinks and alcohol in your diet. You will find that developing a plant based diet will support your body’s natural processes. Drinking tea and coconut water may help reduce discomfort. Yogurt, honey and fruits like bananas or avocados will help. Ginger root will help to minimize inflammation and irritation.

3. Reduce Stress

Reducing stress is an important aspect of maintaining a healthy body. Take time from your work and responsibilities when you are able to do so. Develop a healthy exercise regimen to help you manage your stress. Yoga and jogging can help to rid yourself of excess energy that may be turned to mental agitation. Practicing mindfulness and meditation will allow you to better process your thoughts. This will not only help to reduce unpleasant and harmful sensations in your digestive system, but will also make life easier for you in general.
