Bedeviled by mounting costs, the NHS has turned to hounding terminally-sick cancer patients to earn more revenue. Patients who scrape up the money to pay for "top-up" drugs that might prolong their life, were being told they now had to pay for all their NHS treatment - even down to a plaster.

Pay a higher price up front and get a date for your operation. Or don't and wait. That's the Swiss system. Get a liver for transplanting on a NHS patient, and sell it to the Gulf. That's the British system. Both don't seem very nice.

NHS employs around 2,500 staff of whom almost 1,000 are nurses, 300 are medical staff and over 330 are professions allied to medicine and scientific and technical staff.

Any man who’s had anything to do with prostate tests will be rejoicing at the prospect of an easier diagnosis as to whether he’s got cancer or not.
