The combination of a variety of treatment measures lends itself to the potential for the most stability of the person suffering from Bipolar disorder. Medications work, therapy is helpful, support is necessary, but it is education and awareness that is the keystone that holds the entire treatment plan together, and it is with these collective tools that the individual with Bipolar disorder can live a life, not free from the disorder itself, but with the highest likelihood of the fewest negative consequences associated with the illness.

Bipolar disorder is an old friend of might, but I have a growing concern about one of my sons having bipolar disorder as well which has brought up a load of questions beginning with the question of the behavior I am seeing just him being himself or having bipolar disorder.

I became a psychiatric nurse knowing full well that I had already been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and hoping that functioning as an advocate and provider of mental health services, I was somehow giving myself a "get out of the hospital for free" card.

We cannot control our moods and the swings associated with Bipolar illness, but we CAN control our own behavior associated with monitoring the changes in our moods, thus creating a more healthy awareness cycle, rather than the typical downward spiral.
